Evidence of identification of dying trees
elsewhere comes from Seydack (1995), in mixed age & multi-species forest.
Criteria are as follows:
-
Crown dieback
-
Loss of main shoot
-
Other damage
-
Evidence of rot
Disadvantages include:
-
Increased incidence of timber defects
-
Intensive selection required
-
Dispersed harvest extraction
Dispersed harvest extraction would be much
less of a problem with a helicopter.
Another objection raised by Efford
is that events such as windthrow cannot be predicted. This is true, but
windthrown trees could be harvested instead of standing trees and
this would ensure that only dying trees were harvested.
